The University of Arizona is making moves on the athletics front, announcing the departure of Athletic Director Dave Heeke with immediate effect, following a tenure marked by both advancement and controversy. Heeke, who came on board in 2017 after an 11-year stint with Central Michigan and previously spent 18 years at the University of Oregon, has been a key player in hiring several of the school's top coaches and was notably part of the selection committee for the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
Heeke’s exit follows closely behind the departure of Wildcats head football coach Jedd Fisch, who left for Washington earlier in the month, creating waves in the athletic community, something Heeke himself did not escape from, having been caught in Pullman, Washington due to plane issues while Fisch was being signed away, according to 12News. The university didn't hesitate, naming Brent Brennan as the new head football coach just days after Fisch's exit, showcasing a brisk response to filling the leadership vacuum.
In a statement obtained by AZFamily, the University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins expressed his gratitude towards Heeke's contributions, saying, "I want to thank Dave for his outstanding efforts in leading our athletics program through a period of significant change," and added, "He helped get our men’s and women’s basketball programs and our football program on a strong trajectory oversaw the success of several of our sports teams and greatly enhanced the student-athlete experience."
Stepping into the fray on an interim basis is Mike Candrea, the legendary former Wildcats softball coach whose credentials include eight national titles and status as the NCAA's winningest coach in softball history, his appointment is waiting on the thumbs up from the Arizona Board of Regents, Robbins said that “Every Wildcat knows the history of Mike Candrea and what he means to our university and community, and I am grateful for Mike’s willingness to step into the interim role," signaling confidence in a seamless transition as the search for a permanent Athletic Director begins this confidence bolstered by the school's switch to the Big XII that offers a new landscape filled with possibility.
