After almost four decades of wearing the badge, Woodridge Police Chief Brian Cunningham is hanging it up. Cunningham announced Tuesday that he'll be retiring from the force later this month, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The Chief has spent the last seven years at the helm of the Woodridge Police Department, with previous service that included time with other suburban departments like Burr Ridge and Naperville.

Under his tenure, Chief Cunningham oversaw significant changes, including the necessary formation of a new headquarters for the Woodridge Police Department, among other achievements like the Body-Worn Camera Program. Making the announcement, Cunningham remembered the 2021 tornado as a career highlight, "During this difficult time, members of the community stood by our side as we responded to hundreds of life-threatening calls," he told FOX 32 Chicago. The village, which saw some of its lowest violent crime rates in the past five years, credits his "outstanding policing and leadership," according to CBS News Chicago.

No stranger to reform, Cunningham's work also included the creation of a public information portal and the establishment of de-escalation and officer wellness training programs. Describing the kind of workplace he's leaving behind, Cunningham said, "I've had the honor and pleasure of working alongside some of the most dedicated officers and staff," in a statement obtained by CBS News Chicago.

As Cunningham prepares to depart, the reins will temporarily pass to Deputy Chief of Police Thomas Stefanson who will step in as acting chief according to FOX 32 Chicago, while a search for a permanent replacement is conducted. Meanwhile, on the steps of the Werch Board Room at Village Hall, on Jan. 18 at 5 p.m., a ceremony in his honor will be held. Cunningham's last day is slated for Jan. 24. "His excellent and tireless efforts have helped to keep Woodridge a safe and welcoming community," said Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham, not related to the Chief, in a touch of the bittersweet, as she remarked to CBS News Chicago.
