A horrific two-car collision resulted in the death of a 57-year-old man in Delray Beach early Sunday, officials reported. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office detailed how the crash occurred at 3:40 a.m. near South Military Road and Las Verdes Circle, WPTV disclosed.

German Ribon Barreto of West Palm Beach was northbound on Military Trail in his 2013 red Rav 4 Toyota when a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C250, operated by a 21-year-old man, also traveling north, struck Barreto's vehicle from behind for reasons still yet to be determined. Debris from the wreckage blocked the entryway to Emmanuel Catholic Church, resulting in an unexpected detour for morning congregants.

The impact caused Barreto's Toyota to veer off the road and slam into a telephone pole, authorities said, leading to his immediate death at the scene. On the other hand, the Mercedes driver, after the collision, lost control, mounted a curb, crossed the sidewalk and finally came to a stop on a grassy patch—suffering only minor injuries in the process, as WFLX reported.
