Built by brothers Warren and Charles McArthur, this iconic hotel opened with a three-day gala that soon turned into an unanticipated six-day affair when all the invitees decided to show up, historian John Jordan mentioned in an interview with AZ Family. Despite the Great Depression looming on the horizon, the brothers succeeded in crafting a desert oasis that would become a haven for celebrities and political leaders alike.
Renowned for its distinct design and luxurious accommodations, the hotel has seen a robust list of notable guests grace its halls. "We’ve had every president up through Obama here. Also, Marilyn Monroe loved to crash our Catalina pool, Frank Sinatra, and Clark Gable," Jordan told AZ Family.
