Artificial Intelligence is making its mark on higher education and Arizona State University (ASU) is riding the wave, pioneering the use of AI in an advanced English class to revamp the writing process for students. At the heart of this innovative approach are tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard, as reported by ASU News. Dr. Kyle Jensen, who is at the forefront of integrating this technology into the curriculum, highlighted the university's commitment to contemporary education. "One of the things that we try to do at ASU is teach in a way that's timely," Dr. Jensen stated.

ASU's Chief Information Officer Lev Gonick echoes that sentiment, underscoring the significance of AI across all disciplines. ASU has notably entered into a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, which has developed ChatGPT. Students, embracing the tech, find it indispensable. "It's not really a choice as to whether or not it will be adopted, but the more you know about it, the more effectively, and ethically you can adopt it just in your day-to-day life, or as a professional," Vishrut Chaurasia, a student in the class, told FOX 10 Phoenix.

The actual use of generative AI in the classroom has been transformative, according to students. One of them, Erin Slutzky, described the AI's impact on her work: "It's like having a spotlight that highlights each sentence, making me pause and really think about how it adds value to my main idea." This method of incorporating AI into ENG 390: Methods of Inquiry writing course not only assists students with generating ideas but also enhances their overall writing abilities. ASU News reports that students find these tools to be more than just assistive—they are instructive, pushing them to become more reflective and impactful in their writing.

The emergence of AI in the educational sphere has sparked inevitable discussions, mingled with excitement for what the future holds. "We possess the potential to mold the future of AI tools and their role in our lives," declared Courtney Caputo, an English graduate student, "If we approach it with fear, it will hinder its development as a productive tool. By embracing AI tools — and considering all the ways they can be applied — we can unlock transformative possibilities," she explained to ASU News. Students like Slutzky have already begun to see the benefits: "Say I’m struggling to identify supporting arguments for a paper, and want to explore new perspectives — AI tools enable me to generate fresh ideas and expand my horizons," she shared.

ASU continues to lead this charge toward a digitally-enhanced educational experience, reflecting a broader trend in technology's role in modern teaching and learning strategies. For those interested in delving deeper into the role of AI in academia, ASU offers a six-part discussion series on generative AI tools, providing further insight into the university's dynamic approach to education in the age of AI.
