The city of Austin is mapping out the future of its downtown landscape with plans for a comprehensive development near the Austin Convention Center. Early proposals indicate a mix of new hotels, multi-family residences, and retail spaces available on the ground floor, according to KXAN.
Currently parked at the start line, the development proposal is navigating through a three-phase planning process, with preliminary market analysis findings already presented. With the anticipated green light, construction is projected to rev up in 2026. In a slideshow presentation seen by the Austin City Council, city staff laid the groundwork for potential zoning and land use opportunities surrounding the convention center's current site.
Community voices will not go unheard, as the council has signaled its intent to seek robust public input. Among these outreach efforts, "council feedback will be welcome in various engagement activities, including 15 stakeholder interviews, an online survey with 55 participants, as well as a community open house," as reported by KXAN.
The project moves to the approaching finish line as the city gears up for its next move: developer solicitation. The new expansion strategy for the Austin Convention Center is set to close the convention center for a four-year sprint of construction, commencing after South by Southwest in 2025, with doors expected to reopen in time for the 2029 festival, News Chronicle Today.
