A police confrontation at a Michigan coffee shop resulted in the fatal shooting of a Texas man and the wounding of a Battle Creek officer, authorities confirmed. The encounter unfolded when officers were dispatched to Café Rica on East Michigan Avenue after a man's behavior escalated concerns. The incident left Dario Agudelo, 29, dead and a police officer hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, according to reports from WZZM13.
Initial police involvement began Thursday morning around 9 a.m., following reports of an "unwanted subject" at Café Rica, Twin reports from WOODTV indicated. Agudelo was to later become involved in a felonious assault on Monroe Street before returning to the coffee shop in the afternoon. Attempting to detain Agudelo, an officer deployed her Taser but to no apparent effect; he subsequently tackled the officer and took her service weapon, using it to shoot her in the leg.
Body camera footage from the officers present during the clash was later released, capturing the swift development of the struggle. "That video kind of speaks volumes," Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley said during a press conference referenced by Hoodline. "Their decisions are nanoseconds sometimes, especially when you have to consider an officer's size compared to the individual's size that they're dealing with." At the time of the confrontation, Agudelo stood at 6'2" and weighed around 300 pounds.
Following the incident, the injured officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to a hospital and has since been released. In statements obtained by WZZM13, Chief Bagley expressed his sorrow over the loss of life but also recognition for his officers' quick response amid harrowing circumstances. "This is a horrific situation, we wish that it had not occurred," he said. "All things considered, we're sorry that there was a loss of life, but we are also very blessed that the officer is also going to be fine." Both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as per standard procedure while the Michigan State Police investigates.
Online records highlighted by WOODTV disclosed a recent criminal past for Agudelo, involving a felony drug charge out of Jackson County in October 2022, later pled down to a misdemeanor with jail time served. He had been released just weeks before the altercation from the Jackson County Jail. As the investigation continues, authorities cautioned locals to steer clear of the area between Division Street and Capital Avenue during the ongoing inquiry.
