According to the latest from the National Weather Service San Francisco CA, Friday's breather with dry conditions will be short-lived as a cold front is set to bring moderate rain and wind starting Saturday. In anticipation of the storm, they noted, "Dry conditions will continue today before an approaching cold front brings moderate rain and wind through the day Saturday. Another system will bring heavier rain and wind Sunday evening through Monday morning."
The front on Saturday is expected to introduce a rainfall of "around 1-2" in the North Bay and 0.5-1" elsewhere," laying the groundwork for increased soil moisture and rising streams and rivers before Sunday's heavier rain. The skies will turn more aggressive with a worrying meteorological term: “explosive cyclogenesis,” hinting at a strong low pressure forming that could potentially intensify the storm, as brought to Bay Area weather watchers by NWS San Francisco CA's forecast discussion.
Moreover, the high surf could become a substantial hazard along the coast. Beachgoers are being issued a warning about "large breaking waves of 18 to 22 feet" capable of sweeping people into the churning ocean. These waves could occasionally crest even higher at some locations, reaching 28 feet. The NWS forewarns of the risks, stating, "In addition to the westerly swell, strong southerly winds will enhance the energy in the surf zone, creating dangerous conditions for surfers and swimmers."
Hydrological concerns are also ramping up, with "moderate to rapid rises along area creeks, streams, and rivers across the region" expected. Municipal services and rescue teams may be on high alert, as the risk of landslides compounds the flood threat in saturated soils of steep hillsides. The NWS urges residents to "expect localized ponding of water in low-lying or poorly drained areas," a common hazard during torrential rainfall events.
Lastly, boaters should be wary of treacherous waters this weekend. The blend of rising swells and brisk southerly breezes can lead to "hazardous conditions for small and medium-sized vessels," with significant wave heights forecast to hit between 14 and 18 feet on Saturday. These tumultuous conditions will persist into the next week, keeping coastal waters fraught with peril for any seafaring vessels and marine operations.
