Bostonians, get ready to dine al fresco once more, because Mayor Michelle Wu has kicked off the 2024 season of the Outdoor Dining Program, applications for which are now live. This revamped dining scene isn't just a breath of fresh air but a strategic move by the city to streamline the process for local business owners while addressing key issues like accessibility and resident quality of life, as Boston.gov reported.

The program comes packed with new perks including one-on-one outdoor dining consultations, a slew of accessible design templates, and an application tracking system that delivers updates in real time—this shoot to streamline comes after the city, working closely with the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, the Streets Cabinet, and the Disabilities Commission, heard the clamor for smoother execution loud and clear. Mayor Michelle Wu highlighted the benefits, saying, "This year, we’re making it easier for new and previously approved businesses to take part in the program, creating spaces to gather together and enjoy the cuisine of our small businesses." Meanwhile, Segun Idowu, Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, chimed in with praise for the city's diverse restaurateurs and the continued success of outdoor dining in the area.

Don't forget the fees; restaurants with a liquor license will owe $399 monthly, and those without will be lighter by $199, aimed to support the city's administration of the program. While newcomers to the program undergo a thorough application process, veterans with previously approved patio designs can expect a swifter return to the outdoor scene. The tailored program demands applicants to have their site plans drawn up by a registered architect or engineer, ensuring that diners sip and savor in safety and comfort, with accessibility and neighborly consideration taken into the blueprint.

2023's permit process in the North End, notorious for its chock-a-block density and spaghetti-narrow streets, saw sidewalk patios get the green light over their on-street counterparts; the City plans to continue this policy in 2024 and may introduce more rules tailored for specific neighborhoods as needed. "The city’s outdoor dining program was an invaluable lifeline to us during the pandemic that continues to be immensely helpful to our business and positively received by our guests," said Jefferson Macklin, partner and business manager of Traveler Street Hospitality, a seasoned participant in the South End scenes offer an insider perspective.

For those eager to partake, mark your calendars; outdoor dining kicks off May 1 and will wrap up come Halloween on October 31. Eateries will need to wind things down by 9:30 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, with a slight extension till 10:30 p.m. come the weekend, leaving enough time for patrons to finish their meals and memories before they're kindly asked to vacate the premises. It seems Boston is setting the table for another season of open-air enjoyment and culinary adventure, creating nooks in its urban landscape where people can imbibe the flavors of their city beneath the sky.
