A confrontation in the early hours of Saturday at a Carol Stream apartment complex ended with police fatally shooting a man during what they described as a "domestic violence incident." The incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. at Village Brook Apartments, located on the 200 block of East St. Charles Road, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Isaac Goodlow III, 30, was pronounced dead at Central DuPage Hospital following the encounter, where Carol Stream police had responded to what they called a "tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving situation." This situation culminated in at least one officer discharging their weapon, and Goodlow sustaining critical injuries. An autopsy is pending, per statements from the DuPage County coroner's office.
The officers involved in the shooting have since been placed on paid leave, an action that is routine in such incidents. The body-worn camera footage from responding officers is slated for review and will be released by the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office, police said. Investigations have been initiated by officials from the state’s attorney’s office and other DuPage County agencies.
According to an NBC Chicago interview with Goodlow's brother, Michael Pigram, the incident involved Goodlow and a new girlfriend. Pigram, a resident at the same complex, expressed frustration with the lack of information provided by authorities, stating, "They didn't want to save his life. And as far as giving us information, they had no urgency to help us at all." Details surrounding whether Goodlow was armed at the moment of the shooting have not been disclosed by authorities.
Police involvement in the case extends to coordination with DuPage County's Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigations Team (MERIT) taskforce, with the Forensic Investigations Unit still processing the scene as of Saturday night. The complexity of the case warrants a thorough investigation that will engage multiple agencies "for an indeterminate amount of time" as stated by police in their quest for full transparency. One of the officers involved in the shooting, now on leave, is noted to have previously worked at another police department, but had not been involved in an incident of discharging their firearm while with the Carol Stream police, Acting Chief of Police Brian Cluever revealed.
