In an event that has stunned the local community, a Chandler resident's dog was brutally killed at Shawnee Dog Park. Conrad Calderon had taken his pit bull terrier mix, Tawny, to the park for an evening of enjoyment which tragically ended in the animal's death. Calderon recounted that a man, accompanied by two large black dogs, entered the park and, after a brief scuffle between the dogs, pulled out a knife and stabbed Tawny twice before leaving the scene, according to a WKYT report.
Calderon, in a state of disbelief, described the attack as unprovoked and unjustified, lamenting, "Who stabs a dog that doesn’t even bite your dog?" The grieving owner has been canvassing the area with flyers and searching for witnesses, as he fears for the community's safety in what is perceived as a peaceful environment. "What makes this guy the judge, jury, and executioner of somebody else’s family?" Calderon told AZFamily.
The Chandler community has been left deeply troubled by the incident. Calderon is now pushing for the installation of cameras at Shawnee Dog Park to prevent future tragedies and enhance security measures. He shared with the media his perception of the assailant's demeanor, stating, "The guy was very nonchalant about it." Despite the shock and grief, Calderon hopes to prevent such a violent act from recurring by capturing the suspect, whom he referred to as a "loose cannon" in his statements to AZFamily.
The Chandler Police Department is currently investigating the stabbing and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, Calderon mourns Tawny, whom he adopted last December, and treasures the memory of her final moments. "Her last hour was the best hour she ever had," he shared in a heartrending reminiscence to WKYT. The community stands with Calderon, as they collectively seek justice for Tawny and safety for their beloved pets.
