Two young females, aged 12 and 17, are facing a heavy load of charges after a series of retail thefts across Chicago, snagging thousands of dollars in merchandise. Chicago Police confirmed the juveniles' arrest on February 8, 2024, stating the duo hit several businesses on multiple occasions, ranging from November 2023 to February 2024.
In detail, the spree included stops at the 4400 block of N. Broadway, the 3200 block of N. Clark, and the 600 block of N. LaSalle, as outlined in the report by the Chicago Police Department. With eight felony and four misdemeanor counts, the 12-year-old is alleged to have participated in theft from a business located in the 1100 block of W. Jackson. Her elder counterpart is staring down seven felony counts including one for a January 18 robbery, and an additional four misdemeanor counts.
These arrests highlight a wider problem within the city as businesses struggle against an uptick in retail theft. The young age of the offenders in these cases has drawn particular attention, striking a chord with community leaders concerned about juvenile crime in Chicago.
Officials placed the juveniles into custody following their swift identification as the suspects. The 17-year-old was also linked to a robbery that had taken place in the 1600 block of W. Division. Merchandise was taken, and no one could suspect the youth of these thieves as they ravaged through businesses, stealing not just goods, but also the peace of mind of local shopkeepers.
