The Chicago Police Department issued a business alert for citizens and establishments in the 9th District (Deering) after a string of armed robberies rattled the area. These incidents occurred in January and February, with a lone gunman approaching victims on the street or entering businesses to demand money. According to the police's advisory, the suspect, described as a male black offender between 5'08" and 6'01" and weighing 150-160 pounds, flees the scene on foot after taking cash from the registers.
The crime pattern reveals that the suspect acts alone, brandishing a two-tone handgun, and is also noted to sport black pants, a black skull cap, and distinctive black Harry Potter-style glasses. The geographical locations of these crimes span across South Loomis Boulevard, South Throop Street, West 48th Street, and South Ashland Avenue - details of the specific blocks and times of each incident have been listed in the alert. No getaway vehicle has been reported in connection with these robberies.
In response to the criminal activities, the police have guided safety precautions, advising residents and business owners to always be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity immediately. The public is urged to stay calm if confronted and to take note of any unique characteristics of the assailant that may aid police investigations. Additionally, individuals are advised against pursuing fleeing assailants and instead focus on providing detailed information to the authorities.
Further safety tips include the preservation of any video surveillance footage and the importance of exchanging contact information with any witnesses present. Police stress the crucial action of dialing 9-1-1 immediately and, if possible, remaining on the scene to aid in the swift response and investigation. The last reported incidents took place in the 2000 block of West 47th Street on February 11, 2024, raising concerns among the affected communities for their safety and calling for heightened vigilance as law enforcement continues their search for the perpetrator.
