Residents in several Chicago districts are being warned of a spate of license plate thefts that have left vehicle owners scratching their heads — and police hunting for the anonymous culprits. Notices have been circulated after a string of incidents were reported across the 016th, 017th, and 025th Districts, with the unknown perpetrators making off with either the front or rear license plates from vehicles, and occasionally both. According to the Chicago Police Department's community alert, these thefts have taken place mostly in the dead of night and have been discovered by the unfortunate car owners the following day.
Detailing the predicament, the community alert outlines a series of thefts that span at least a dozen blocks, starting with the 3500 block of North Elston Ave on February 1, 2024, and including the 3700 block of North Newcastle Ave on February 13, 2024.
In the wake of the escalating incidents, the police are urging locals to remain vigilant and inspect their vehicles to ensure that both license plates are accounted for and properly fastened. As an added measure, installing and maintaining surveillance systems are advised to capture any act of foul play. Community members are prompted to keep a keen eye out for anything out of the ordinary — a suspicious person or vehicle that perhaps lingers a little long and to call 911 immediately should they note anything amiss, providing as detailed a description as possible of any suspect or vehicle involved.
While the offenders have so far managed to skirt identification, community members can play a pivotal role in stamping out these clandestine thefts by paying attention and reporting suspicious activity. The CPD alert stresses the importance of quick reporting, stating, "If a plate is missing notify the police immediately." By tightening the gaze of the community and law enforcement, the hope is that these plate thieves will soon be stopped in their tracks.
