Motorists in the 25th (Grand Central) District should brace for a DUI Saturation Patrol from Saturday, February 3, starting at 6 p.m., through to the wee hours of Sunday, February 4, ending at 2 a.m., according to an official announcement by the Chicago Police Department.
The initiative isn't just about keeping drunk drivers off the road; it's a concerted crackdown on a medley of violations. Swarming with roving officers, these patrols have their gaze set not only on DUI suspects but also on those breaking speed limits, skirting alcohol-related laws, and disregarding safety belt regulations. Vehicles equipped for speed detection will be out, ready to pounce on speedsters endangering Chicago's streets, the department stated.
An additional layer to this enforcement push, the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit may be in action, too. This tactical resource speeds up the charging process for those caught DUI, eliminating the need to transport culprits to a lockup facility immediately. It also grants officers the capability to hand out Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) right at the patrol site, adding a layer of efficiency to the procedure.
The results from a previous patrol on January 27-28 in the 20th (Lincoln) District give a hint of what to expect: not a single DUI arrest amidst a varied catch of 45 citations, which included 10 for unsafe vehicle violations, 6 insurance violations, and a handful for disregarding seat belt laws. Traffic violations floored in at 19 with all other counts lower, as per the department's rundown. Noteworthy, a single vehicle found itself impounded, and authorities made another unrelated arrest.
This weekend's DUI Saturation Patrol follows a clear message from Chicago's police force, no tolerance for careless driving.
