Chicago Police are turning to the public for help in tracking down a suspect linked to a brazen armed robbery on the city's Red Line. Detectives have released images of the individual accused of attacking a commuter with a chemical irritant before snatching their cash, officials said Saturday.
The attack, which unfolded on January 28th around 5:30 am at the Granville stop in Edgewater, has raised concerns about safety on the public transit system. The victim was waiting on the platform when the assailant, described by police as an African American between the ages of 19-25, sprayed them with an unknown chemical and forcibly took their money. Authorities have not disclosed the amount taken.
Police are asking anyone who might have information or recognize the suspect from the photos to come forward. The Chicago Police Department stressed the importance of community assistance in apprehending the suspect and preventing further incidents. The photos depict a young individual wearing dark clothing and a mask.
The department has not provided any information concerning the possibility of other suspects or whether the victim knew the attacker. As the investigation continues, Chicagoans are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially in high-risk areas like mass transit stations. The Red Line has been a repeat spot for criminal activity, despite ongoing efforts to bolster security.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Mass Transit Detectives. Meanwhile, commuters are advised to exercise heightened caution while using the city's mass transport system during the early morning hours or late at night.
