Armed carjackers plowed into a Chicago police car Thursday night in the Rogers Park neighborhood shortly after commandeering a vehicle from a 23-year-old woman. CBS Chicago reports that the incident began near the 6700 block of North Newgard Avenue, where the woman, upon exiting her white Nissan Sentra, was confronted by three males brandishing a firearm. She was forced to surrender her keys, after which the assailants sped away in her car.
The chaos unfolded around 9:30 p.m., moments following the carjacking when the stolen vehicle struck a Chicago police SUV actively searching for the suspects. According to CWB Chicago, the police SUV, part of a saturation team addressing a rise in robbery incidents, was sideswiped by the hijacked Nissan, which was driven the wrong way up a one-way street.
While no injuries were reported, the offenders' brazen acts culminated in another collision. The carjackers continued their flight only to crash again in the 7100 block of North Greenview Avenue, abandoning the vehicle they had just seized. A firearm was subsequently recovered from inside the forsaken car.
Although the suspects managed to escape, initial descriptions portray them as three Black males in their teens, slender and approximately 5’10” tall. Masks obscured much of their appearance, yet one suspect was noted to distinctly have light skin with freckles, CWB Chicago outlined through witness accounts from the scene.
Chicago authorities have yet to make arrests in the case as Area 3 detectives delve into the night's events and the assailants' swift yet fleeting evasion. With police vigilance heightened amidst the spate of recent robberies, the community's unease lingers, tinged with the stark reality of the violence that unfolded that evening. Surveillance and investigative efforts continue in hopes of apprehending the individuals responsible, as reported by CBS Chicago.
