Burglars have hit the 9th District hard this February, forcing local businesses to ratchet up security measures. The Chicago Police Department has issued an alert for Deering—warning store owners and residents of a wave of break-ins that have left the local economy reeling.
The string of burglaries, all perpetrated under the cloak of darkness, has seen thieves gaining entry through windows and doors to pilfer whatever they can lay their hands on. Notable incidents—forming an alarming pattern—took place on the 3000 block of W. 47th St. on February 1, the 400 block on February 4, the 2500 block on February 12, the 1100 block between February 10-12, and the 4500 block of S. Ashland on February 11. These thefts, occurring across a concentrated area, hint at a calculated spree by the unknown criminals.
In an effort to curb the break-ins, authorities are urging proprietors to maintain vigilant surveillance. Recommendations include keeping the periphery of properties well-lit and immediately reporting any unusual activity. Businesses are also being advised to ensure their doors and windows are consistently locked and to repair any structural vulnerabilities promptly.
For establishments equipped with surveillance technology, the police have requested that footage of any suspicious activity be preserved for investigational use. In the unfortunate event of a burglary, affected business owners should refrain from tampering with the crime scene and contact authorities straightaway, the police advisory states.
The advisory also recommends bolstering security around air conditioner units—a common entry point for burglars. Neighborhood businesses have been shaken by the frequency of these incidents, with multiple locations being targeted in rapid succession, it's clear that the community's sense of safety has been deeply compromised by these events.
