Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood became the unwelcome canvas for a spate of anti-Israel and antisemitic graffiti this weekend, leaving residents shocked and authorities searching for the culprits. According to CBS, locals awoke Sunday to find the inflammatory messages scrawled across multiple buildings. The city's Department of Streets and Sanitation took swift action, erasing the graffiti from the surfaces within short order.
The unwanted tags appear to coincide with escalating tensions of the Israel-Hamas conflict overseas, which has rekindled dialogue and dissent around the globe. "I woke up to find it there," a woman who resides across from one vandalized building told CBS 2, describing her reaction to the graffiti as "shocking". In a display of communal disdain for the act, some residents were witnessed covering or scrubbing the graffiti themselves.
Chicago police have since initiated an investigation into the graffiti, acknowledging at least four incidents over the weekend, WLS reports. The antisemitic messages were discovered in the 2800 block of West Logan Boulevard, the 2500 block of North Francisco Avenue, and twice in the 2500 block of North Mozart Street. Despite these deplorable acts staining the neighborhood, no arrests have been made thus far.
