The Commerce Police Department has found itself at the center of controversy as one of their officers is accused of wrongfully charging multiple individuals with DUI. Officer Cody Wood, who is currently on paid administrative leave, has been the subject of an ongoing investigation after a series of questionable arrests surfaced, putting the department's procedures under scrutiny.
In an investigation led by the FOX 5 I-Team, it was revealed that Officer Wood's decisions to arrest drivers for DUI seemed to frequently outpace the available evidence. Aaron Cash, one of those arrested, was charged even after passing multiple breathalyzer tests. "I'm about to lose my job, too," Cash could be heard saying on the body cam footage after his erroneous arrest. His case, along with others, was eventually dismissed, but the question of accountability lingers as Officer Wood faces no immediate disciplinary action for the wrongful arrests.
The controversy has led to a larger review of Wood's DUI cases, with the City of Commerce calling in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to assure transparency. For example, one implicated individual, Randall McDuffie, was charged after Officer Wood "just feel like you’re on something," as McDuffie recounted Wood saying.
