A construction worker was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Clayton County, officials reported. The Georgia Department of Transportation indicated the deadly incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. near Mount Zion Boulevard, as described by FOX 5 Atlanta.
In an unrelated event, a massive eight-car pileup wreaked havoc on Interstate 20 westbound in DeKalb County on Sunday, though miraculously, no injuries were documented according to WSB-TV.
The worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene after a black Kia Forte veered into the construction zone hitting them, the driver's fate in terms of facing charges remains uncertain and the crash is still under investigation; the interstate was closed for several hours due to the accident but resumed normal traffic flow by earlier today. Conversely, drivers on I-20 were at a standstill when police responded to the scene of the multi-vehicle accident right before Wesley Chapel Road around 12:15 p.m., DeKalb County authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collision which snarled traffic for an extended period.
While the tragedy on I-75 has prompted a deeper probe into construction zone safety and driver awareness, the DeKalb County Police Department has confirmed that, despite the scale of the crash on I-20, all involved parties were spared from physical harm, the investigation into what precipitated the mayhem continues. Both incidents have incited discussions around vehicular safety and precautionary measures on Georgia's highways, particularly in zones of construction or heavy traffic.
