A Coral Springs man is behind bars after confessing to the brutal murder of a pet dog while under the influence of drugs, local police reported. Steven Mckinney, 58, was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty following his admission to police that he fatally stabbed Katie, the dog, leading to a near decapitation. Coral Springs Police were called to his home on February 13, where they found the grisly scene.
According to an arrest affidavit mentioned by Coral Springs Talk, Mckinney attacked the dog around 9 a.m., severing most of her head from her body. A witness described the horrifying moment when they awoke to the dog's cries, only to discover Mckinney violently wrenching the dog's neck on the back patio. The roommate's subsequent call to the authorities brought police to the scene, where they found Katie soaked in blood, her head barely attached.
"I lost it, I killed Katie," Mckinney allegedly confessed afterward, as cited in TapInto. After committing the act, Mckinney turned the knife on himself, inflicting a neck injury. Responding officers reported that a roommate helped to restrain Mckinney and managed to give him first aid until aid arrived.
Mckinney, who had been attempting to detox from fentanyl and claimed to suffer from multiple personality disorder, told authorities that he was high on LSD and fentanyl during the killing. His confessions at the hospital corroborated the details of the crime, verifying the drug-induced state that culminated in violence. He was then held at the North Broward Bureau Jail on a $75,000 bond.
