Dallas witnessed a dramatic shootout in the early hours of February 11, as body camera footage reveals the tense moments when Dallas Police officers exchanged gunfire with a robbery suspect. The suspect identified as 23-year-old Reginald Curry, engaged in a shooting with police in the Red Bird neighborhood before being apprehended.
According to a FOX 4 News report, the incident happened in an illegal gaming room on W. Wheatland Road. The released video showed officers responding to the scene after a man alerted them to the robbery. Amid the chaos, Curry began firing at officers as he escaped, prompting a dangerous pursuit and shootout.
The video captures officers shouting, "Are y’all being robbed?" to which the man emphatically replied "Yeah". As the confrontation escalated, officers could be heard commanding Curry to "Show me your hands!" despite the exchange of gunfire. Curry was subsequently shot in the leg and chest, with officers providing medical care after disarming him. The harrowing moment where an officer stated, "A bullet went right past my head," underscores the perilous nature of the standoff, which fortunately left no officers injured. Police later found three weapons they believed belonged to Curry, including one in the gaming room, another in a parking lot, and a third on Curry when he was arrested, as per FOX 4 News.
Meanwhile, footage released conveyed the gravity of the situation as officers returned fire, striking Curry in the leg and chest area, as detailed by The Dallas Morning News. They can be heard instructing Curry to "Keep your hands where I can see them, we will shoot again," before handcuffing the suspect who acknowledged being hit in his leg and side. Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel swiftly arrived and transported Curry to the hospital in critical, but stable condition.
Now behind bars and out of the hospital, Curry is faced with three counts of aggravated assault of a public servant. Investigations into the shootout are currently being conducted by both the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. With additional charges and arrests possible, the incident marks the first officer-involved shooting in Dallas for the year 2024.
