An 11-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a drive-by shooting while she was asleep on a couch in a Detroit home, police say. The incident occurred early Tuesday on the city's east side in the 6000 block of Pennsylvania, near Interstate 94 and Gratiot Avenue. A barrage of gunfire, about 23 rounds, was unleashed upon the residence, infiltrating the walls and striking the young girl in the head, according to The Detroit News.
Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald of the Detroit Police stated that the home was "full of people" at the time of the shooting. As the girl lay critically injured, detectives turned to security footage from a nearby camera which showed a white or silver SUV approach, and two men firing shots at the house before speeding away. This same house was targeted in a similar episode back in December 2023, but, no one was harmed at that time, FOX 2 Detroit reported.
The young victim was rushed to the Children's Hospital of Michigan following the shooting and remains in critical condition. Confusion swirls around the circumstances of the incident, with an uncle on scene uncertain of his own niece's name and a father who appeared at the hospital later, "The story doesn't make a whole lot of sense," Fitzgerald remarked, as noted by CBS Detroit.
Police continue to investigate the case. Anyone with information is urged to step forward.
