A Detroit woman facing allegations of moonlighting as an unlicensed real estate agent and a phony CPA, authorities announced. Krystal Davis, 37, was hit with charges including one count of accounting violations for posing as a certified public accountant – a five-year felony – and two counts of violating the state occupational code by operating as an unlicensed real estate agent, each carrying a possible 90-day jail stint, as per the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
During her arraignment last Friday at the 36th District Court, Magistrate William Burton set Davis' bond at an eye-watering $100,000 and pegged February 20th for her next court date however, the case began to unravel when Davis, linked to Card Property Management LLC., allegedly entered into agreements with property owners in Detroit under the guise of providing a suite of management services, from fixing rental rates to handling evictions, without holding the necessary legal credentials, Detroit News reported.
According to Nessel's statement, these professional licenses are paramount as they often require rigorous exams and are designed to echo industry best practices that ultimately serve and protect client interests. Prosecutors charged that Davis was not licensed in Michigan as a real estate broker or real estate salesperson, required by law for such property management activities, nor was her firm, Card Property Management LLC – an assumed name of Card Enterprises LLC – authorized to tender real estate services.
Adding to the heap of allegations, Davis purportedly claimed CPA status in an electronic communication while attempting to drum up tax preparation business, “When Michigan residents seek assistance with their business and financial affairs, they must be able to trust the representations professionals make about their qualifications," said Nessel further expanding on the matter, Davis is not licensed as a CPA in the state of Michigan, according to an update from Michigan Department of Attorney General.
The upcoming probable cause conference slated for February 20th might provide a clearer roadmap of the legal proceedings that Davis faces.
