Tragedy struck early Friday morning on the Dan Ryan Expressway when a female pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle that failed to stop. Illinois State Police reported that the incident occurred around 12:35 a.m. in the northbound lanes near 34th Street. The Chicago Sun-Times confirms that the woman was dead at the scene and that her identification details, including name and age, were not immediately available to the authorities.
The expressway, which was closed following the incident, was reopened by 3:45 a.m. as investigators began to seemingly piece together the circumstances that led to the woman's death. Details are still scarce, and the driver is yet to be apprehended. WGN-TV highlighted that it remains unclear why the woman was on the expressway at that time.
Illinois State Police are combing through evidence and seeking witnesses to construct what transpired in the moments leading up to the fatal hit-and-run. No description of the vehicle involved has been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
The authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to immediately come forward. The public will be updated as new information becomes available and can hopefully offer leads to track down the driver responsible for the hit-and-run.
