A tragic incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when a FedEx truck slammed into a guardrail and erupted in flames on I-294, near Lake Cook Road, in the suburbs of Deerfield and Northbrook, leading to the death of the driver. The catastrophic sequence of events began around 2:30 a.m., causing major disruptions along the northern ramp of the tri-state highway.
The crash was so severe that the driver of the FedEx vehicle was forcibly ejected from the truck. Despite being rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, the individual did not survive, according to WGN-TV. The right lane on the tristate near the accident site was blocked as a result of the collision, although traffic on I-294 continued to move at a steady pace.
Emergency crews and Illinois State Police responded promptly to the fiery crash, which sent smoke billowing into the air and proved to be a gruesome sight for early morning commuters. The burnt remnants of the FedEx truck and a substantial emergency response could be witnessed at the scene, with the smoking wreckage remaining for several hours after the initial impact.
NBC 5 Traffic reporter Kye Martin captured the aftermath, noting, "We're still seeing the smoking FedEx truck blocking the ramp," in a statement obtained by NBC Chicago. Despite a blocked ramp and smoke from the persistent fire, Martin confirmed that I-294 traffic was flowing without significant delays.
There has been no further insight into the cause of the accident. State authorities are continuing their investigation into why the FedEx truck hit the guardrail. In the interim, motorists are urged to exercise caution while passing near the site of the now-deadly crash on I-294 as police and fire units proceed with their on-scene activities.
