An early morning blaze in Orland Park has left a firefighter and a resident injured as a couple narrowly escaped their burning home. According to CBS Chicago, the fire broke out before dawn on Tuesday, with heavy flames engulfing a house at Holly Court and Highland Avenue. The homeowner, rudely awakened by the shrieking alarm, recounted the harrowing experience of fleeing through the back door, surrounded by thick smoke.
The woman's husband, handicapped by a prior broken ankle, managed a perilous crawl to safety through the front door. The family, while fortunate in their escape, suffered the loss of two pets in the fire—a cat and a turtle claimed by the smoke and flames. CBS Chicago reports that the fire also spread damage to an adjacent home to the north, expanding the incident beyond a single-family tragedy.
In the midst of contending with the fierce flames, a firefighter from the Orland Fire Protection District sustained injuries. ABC7 Chicago notes that he was taken to a local hospital for treatment and, fortunately, was released later the same day. The swift response from the fire department managed to control the fire within 20 minutes, a testament to the quick action and bravery of the local fire services.
Orland Fire Protection District Chief Michael Schofield confirmed that the fire also affected the house next door, highlighting the destructive nature of the incident. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Orland Park Police Department, the Orland Fire Protection District, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal. With the cause yet to be determined, the blow dealt to this suburban community lingers in a mix of relief for the lives spared and mourning for the beloved pets lost.
