Chaos erupted in Chicago's Little Village early Sunday when a heated argument spiraled into a shooting that left five people wounded, with one woman fighting for her life, Chicago police confirmed. The confrontation began around 3:40 a.m. near the 3500 block of West 30th Street, where it is reported by the Chicago Sun-Times that a man, 30, clashed with the shooter before gunfire broke out.
About that time, according to the WLS report, an unidentified assailant brandished a weapon and unleashed a barrage of bullets. In the terror of the moment, as the shooter fled in a white van, a number of bystanders were struck, among them were three women, ages 22, 30, and 48, in addition to a 53-year-old man. The 30-year-old male victim sustained a leg injury and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, said the police.
The carnage left the 30-year-old woman in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the severity of her injuries distinguishing her plight from the others, who were all taken to Stroger and listed in good condition: a 53-year-old man hit multiple times in the legs, a 48-year-old woman who took a bullet in the leg, and another 22-year-old woman lightly wounded in the thigh.
As of now, the authorities have not arrested any suspects, and the link between the victims and the assailant remains unclear, the police told reporters the details are still being pieced together and the gunman's escape vehicle, the white van, has become a focal point of the ongoing investigation. Anyone with any knowledge of the incident is urged to come forward and assist in bringing some semblance of justice to the wounded and the communities tormented by such senseless violence.
