Fort Lauderdale's travel infrastructure is set to receive a significant upgrade, thanks to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forking over a whopping $50 million to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Announced last Thursday, the grant is part of the FY 2024 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's competitive Airport Terminal Program, allocating nearly $1 billion across various airports. This scoop of federal funds is lauded as the largest grant to rain down among 114 U.S. airports that were awarded on the same day.
The heavy infusion of cash will partly bankroll FLL's ambitious Terminal Connectors project to the tune of an estimated $260 million. According to a statement from the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD), the project will construct enclosed post-security walkways effortlessly to link Terminals 1 and 2, as well as Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers can soon expect a smoother transit experience, with enhanced security checkpoints and an expanded bag hall also on the checklist.
"We're elated to receive news of this signature federal funding allocation for FLL - the largest grant allocation among the 114 U.S. airports awarded on Thursday," BCAD CEO/Director of Aviation Mark Gale remarked in a statement obtained by the Broward County website. "It took a lot of effort and collaborative work on multiple levels to position our airport to qualify for this significant grant, and I'd like to thank everyone involved."
The sprawling Terminal Connectors project is earmarked for completion in late 2027, relying on not just FAA grants but also the generosity of FLL's signatory airlines and the Florida Department of Transportation. "The two new terminal connectors linking Terminals 1 and 2 and Terminals 2 and 3 will be game changers for FLL," Gale added. According to a report by the Sun Sentinel on X, travelers will be able to seamlessly flit across all terminals without having to exit and re-enter security checkpoints.

County Mayor Nan Rich also chimed in on the windfall, stating, "Congratulations to Broward County's Aviation Department and FLL on receiving this significant funding award." Rich lauded the legislative group, extending special thanks to Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who has been at the forefront pushing for infrastructure improvements in Broward County. With the federal grant now locked in, FLL is bracing to take flight with new infrastructure that promises to enhance the traveling public's experience.
