The mysterious disappearance of a Fort Lauderdale woman in Madrid has sparked an international search and prompted calls for increased intervention from American authorities. Ana Knezevich, described by her best friend as "so caring, so sweet," has been missing since February 2, when neighbors last saw her around 10 p.m.

According to NBC Miami, Knezevich's move to Spain was intended as a new beginning amidst a stressful divorce. However, after failing to show up for a scheduled meeting with a friend and responding to texts with strange messages, concerns for her safety have escalated. Sanna Rameau, the friend who described Knezevich's warm-hearted nature, shared her confusion and distress, saying, "Someone has done something to her and I’m trying to understand who it could be and why?"

Rameau conveyed to WSVN that she received odd text messages from Knezevich's phone, claiming she had met someone and was heading to a summer home with limited phone signal. Rameau's attempts to ensure her friend's safety were met with silence - the messages did not go through, and Knezevich's phone went off.

"We received very bizarre messages from her phone, I have to say from her phone because I don’t believe it was her sending it, that Saturday afternoon after she disappeared. That she had met a man on the street," Rameau told WSVN. Search efforts by friends and family, including a wellness check by the fire department, have so far yielded no results. Making the case more bewildering, a man with a helmet was caught on camera spraying the surveillance cameras outside Knezevich's Madrid apartment shortly before she was last seen.

Rameau has since flown to Madrid in a desperate plea for assistance. "I want the American authorities to help. We have an American citizen that has disappeared abroad and no one in the America is doing anything about it. There is high suspicion of foul play regarding her disappearance. She has not just left. There is high suspicion that someone did something to her," she said in a statement to WSVN. Both Spanish police and the FBI are involved in the investigation, yet there are no leads on Knezevich's whereabouts.

The family also noted that the Spanish text messages sent from Knezevich's phone were in a different dialect, raising further doubts about their authenticity. As the search continues, loved ones are holding onto hope and urging anyone with information to come forward, with Rameau's heartfelt plea echoing for Knezevich's safe return: "We miss and we love her."
