The Furman University community is in mourning after the death of Paladins football player Bryce Stanfield. The 21-year-old from Acworth, Georgia, died following a medical emergency that occurred during an early morning workout on Wednesday at Paladin Stadium.

Stanfield was a senior defensive tackle who had become a staple on the Furman Paladins team, contributing to last season's Southern Conference championship and a second-round victory in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. According to FOX Carolina, he was placed on life support after the incident and passed away just two days later at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

"We are heartbroken beyond measure with Bryce’s sudden passing and ask that everyone, first and foremost, lift up his parents, Fred and Teri Stanfield and their family, in prayer on this day and in the days ahead," Furman coach Clay Hendrix said in a statement obtained by Greenville Online. Hendrix added, "Bryce was an outstanding young man and an equally fine student, football player and friend."

In a moving tribute to their fallen athlete, Furman awarded Stanfield posthumously with a bachelor of science degree in health sciences, magna cum laude. The ceremony was attended by his grieving family, teammates, and coaches. Stanfield, a two-time Southern Conference academic honor roll selection, was also recognized for his service within the community, including reading to children in local schools and visiting patients at Greenville Children's Hospital.

Back in his hometown of Kennesaw, Georgia, Stanfield was remembered as a standout at Harrison High School, where he helped lead the team to the Class 6A state championship in 2019. The Furman community reflects on the deep loss of a student-athlete who was highly regarded not just on the field, but off it, for his outreach and contributions to the local community. Details regarding a memorial service for Stanfield will be announced at a later date.
