Cracking down on a convicted fraudster's assets, federal law enforcement snagged a fancy Ford worth a whopping $70k. Jon Harder, the once high-flying former CEO of Sunwest Management, is watching his wheels roll away into government hands. These funds, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon, are slated to chip away at Harder's jaw-dropping $74 million restitution order.
In a tale of swindling and deceit, Jon Harder admitted to hoodwinking investors in a $120 million fraud scheme, sending shockwaves across Oregon. Court documents show that in July 2023, Harder, unfazed by justice's long arm, acquired a high-priced 2023 Ford F-150 truck. The cash to snag this ride reportedly came courtesy of a non-familial sugar daddy. Despite his sizable debts, the vehicle conveniently found its home in Harder's Canyonville property, according to the Justice Department's announcement.
The luxury truck's seizure was no spur-of-the-moment fluke. On January 19, 2024, U.S. Marshals swooped in under the command of a U.S. District Court order. Their prize? Harder's luxe Ford, plucked right from his residence. Fast forward to Tuesday, and the court is now green-lighting the vehicle's sale, gunning to put those proceeds towards the fallen CEO's hefty restitution tab.
The deceit practiced by Harder isn't just a footnote in Oregon’s ledger; it represents one of the most audacious chapters in its annals of corporate crime. The court witnessed the downfall of a man who once ruled over an empire of about 300 assisted living facilities, entrusted with the lives of more than 15,000 souls. Harder, feigning solvency sold investors a bill of goods about Sunwest's vitality. In doing so, he pulled the wool over the eyes of over 1,400 investors, leaving them out of pocket by more than $120 million. His punishment for spinning these tales of fictitious success: a stiff 180 months in federal prison for his wire fraud and money laundering shenanigans, and that mountainside of restitution money he's now obligated to cough up.
