Key Biscayne Proposes Emergency E-Bike Ban After Fatal Collision Claims Life of Local CyclistSource: Google Street View

A tragic e-bike collision in Key Biscayne has led to the death of a 66-year-old cyclist, prompting local officials to propose an immediate ban on such devices. The fatal incident occurred Wednesday night involving a 12-year-old boy on an e-bike and the victim, Megan Andrews, who was riding her bicycle.

Following the accident, Mayor Joe Rasco announced plans for an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss an emergency e-bike and scooter ban in the village, a measure aimed at preventing future tragedies. In a video posted to Facebook, Rasco stated, "This is a time for all residents to come together as a community as we grieve this terrible loss," as reported by Local 10 News. The boy involved in the collision sustained minor injuries and was wearing an helmet, while Andrews was not.

Det. Argemis Colome of the Miami-Dade Police Department, which has taken over the investigation from the Key Biscayne Police, said the e-bike was being operated by the boy who was riding north while Andrews was heading south. "Both individuals collided in the middle of the roadway causing them to fall," Colome conveyed in a statement obtained by Key Biscayne Independent. Key Biscayne Fire Rescue crews responded to the crash and transported Andrews to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The victims, widely known in the community as a tutor and a radiant presence, has left many residents mourning. "She was fond of riding her bike around town," Council Member Oscar Sardiñas told Key Biscayne Independent, also noting the gravity of the situation and calling for "something needs to stop and something needs to change." The aftermath of the event saw council members and the community reeling, with past concerns about the safety of e-bikes and scooters in the area now thrust sharply into focus.

Efforts to regulate micro-mobility devices in Key Biscayne have been ongoing, but until now, the Village has only managed to ban e-bikes and scooters in parks. With the recent incident, the urgency to act on these regulations has escalated. Council members such as Fernando Vazquez had even voiced fears of such a fatality occurring ahead of time, with a grim prediction that should action not be taken, a life could be lost. As recounted by Key Biscayne Independent, the Council is confronting the reality of their previous near-miss encounters with these devices turning into an all-too-real and fatal scenario.
