The tranquil life of a small Arizona town has been violently disturbed by a recent wave of arson. Joaquine Jeremia Martinez, 24, has been arrested in connection with these incidents that have put the community of Vernon, roughly 19 miles east of Show Low, on high alert. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that Martinez was taken into custody on February 7 in Mesa and is now facing multiple charges including arson, misconduct involving weapons, and burglary.
Vernon, normally experiencing a mere 12 fires yearly, has been rattled by 10 since December, with eight blazes igniting in 2024 alone. The Apache County Sheriff's Office emphasized, through evidence gathered, that the fires were intentionally set—a reality to certainly shake the townsfolk. The Sheriff's Office now is urging anybody with knowledge to step forward, in hopes of permanently extinguishing the threat to their safety.
Among the properties turned to ash was that of Andrew and Christina Simcox, a place that for 25 years acted as a sanctuary, especially for Andrew, a disabled veteran coping with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. "We would sit out there and sit out there on the front porch, and have coffee and BBQ and stuff like that," said Andrew in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix. "But now that’s all gone. I mean, it's burnt all the way down past the footers."
Assistant Fire Chief Nick Perrone confirmed that at least three of this year's fires are suspected cases of arson, adding to the escalating tension within Vernon's bounds. As the investigation continues, locals like Sarah Peterson describe the atmosphere as "exhausting," with fears so intense that leaving home becomes a dread-filled endeavor. "People don’t even want to leave their houses because they are afraid that when they do, it’s going to burn down," shared Andrew with FOX 10 Phoenix.
While no physical injuries have been reported, the emotional and material damage to the Vernon community is substantial. The plea from the authorities remains clear, residents must remain observant and report any suspicious activity. As of now, Joaquin Jeremia Martinez sits in Apache County jail, awaiting the formal charges from the County Attorney's Office as Vernon residents hope for a resolution and a return to their peaceful existence.
