Another family has been dragged into the fray of teen violence that's been riling the East Valley, taking legal action against the alleged perpetrators and their guardians. JoBeth Palmer, whose son was the victim of a prolonged attack, filed a lawsuit earlier this week, targeting nine individuals – a mix of teens and adults – for their apparent roles in the assault and subsequent threats, as reported by 12News.
According to the complaint, Palmer’s son suffered through seven months of harassment and violence, culminating in a brutal May 2023 attack at a Mesa park where he was "surrounded, punched, kicked, and slammed to the ground," with the ordeal noticeably ending up online. Palmer alleges that the antagonists, tied to the "Gilbert Goons," communicated threats through burner phones, laying siege to her son with "dozens of threatening texts." And as per ABC15, these relentless threats were only quelled when one aggressor was finally incarcerated.
Palmer's son wasn’t the only target, with the lawsuit detailing how his father too was menaced when he tried stepping in to intercept communications. The litany of charges against the teens and adults includes civil conspiracy and intentional infliction of emotional distress, bolstered with the claim that, "If the parents of these minors had acted reasonably, the threats, intimidation, and attack on [the victim] never would have occurred," a sentiment echoed by the plaintiff, as reported by ABC15.
With at least a dozen arrests thus far related to these group teen violence cases in the East Valley, the ongoing investigations and court proceedings continue to unveil the severity of the situation, with impacted families resorting to the courts for justice and reprieve from the violence that's pierced their lives. Details from these cases are still unfolding, and updates are expected as new developments come to light.
