In a startling turn of events, a crane tasked with heavy lifting tipped precariously and fell between two houses in northeast Miami-Dade, fortunately sparing the structures from catastrophic damage. The incident occurred late Wednesday afternoon along Northeast 110th Terrace, just a stone's throw from the bustling Biscayne Boulevard, according to a report by Local 10 News.
The accident cut power to an estimated 100 homes, with Florida Power & Light stating that contract workers were busy with an electric line when the crane toppled. FPL was swift to respond, saying they "are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power," as obtained by NBC Miami. Andrea Guerra, a resident of one of the slightly damaged houses, told Local 10 News, that the formidable equipment struck with such force, half the building sustained damage.
No physical injuries were reported, a relief echoed by police statements. However, the psychological jolt of the near miss reverberated through the neighborhood, reminiscent of the grace that spared residents from what could have been a more grievous scene.
Guerra, who has a baby sharing the bedroom where the crane made its unintended descent, expressed her gratitude for their absence, saying, "Thank God we weren’t in the home," according to the NBC Miami interview. The crane not only threatened the sanctity of her abode, but also came crashing down onto power lines, deepening the area's descent into abrupt darkness and uncertainty. Meanwhile, FPL has extended a gesture of support, relocating the affected residents to a hotel in the wake of the incident.
The exact cause of the crane's unsettling plunge remains unknown, with investigations into the matter currently underway. What is evident within the facts is not only the frailty of our constructs when faced with the might of mishaps but also the communal breaths held and released, as fate dealt a hand more merciful than what might have been in northeast Miami-Dade.
