This initiative followed a tragic incident where a 7-year-old Indiana girl perished after a sand hole she was digging collapsed on her at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Statistics from the United States Lifesaving Association have highlighted that 80% of beach rescues are associated with rip currents, which can be especially deceptive during South Florida's windiest months of March and April. To counter this threat, Miami-Dade's lifeguards are intensively training to better spot and quickly to react to such emergencies. "What we need to do is have people make sure they check the conditions, make sure they know what's going on before they come to the beach, in order to avoid these things," Captain Matthew Sparling, Miami-Dade Fire Ocean Rescue Beach Safety Manager, told WSVN.
The water safety demo not only provided visual insights into identifying rip currents but also dramatized the challenges that rescuers face when extracting individuals from collapsed sand holes. "We can't really use heavy shovels, if we hit somebody with a shovel, we can kill them," a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue member explained, according to WSVN.

"People don't even realize they're stuck in a current... They fight, panic, use up all their energy and eventually drown before anyone comes to save them," expressed Sparling, as per a statement obtained by WSVN.
