RFC, backed by state legislators, healthcare advocates, and allies, aims to fortify legal protections, guaranteeing Minnesotans' control over their reproductive health.
RF co-chair Rep. Kaohly Her (DFL – Saint Paul) emphasized the caucus's goal, stating, "We envision a future for Minnesota where everyone– without exception– can shape and realize their reproductive future and destiny." The plan put forth by RFC lobbies for all-encompassing insurance coverage for abortion and gender-affirming care, alongside the push for the ERA state constitutional amendment. Measures to simplify midwife certification processes and expand insurance coverage for both abortion and reproductive healthcare were also highlighted in their robust agenda.
While presenting its vision for reform, RFC framed its goals within the broader context of racial justice, aiming for equitable access across different genders, as per statements released during the press campaign. The caucus has drawn attention to the plight of Black birthing individuals who face significant challenges in obtaining quality reproductive healthcare, leading to disturbingly high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. "Yet, Black birthing people continue to face unacceptable disparities in their healthcare," said Rep. Esther Agbaje (DFL – Minneapolis).
Spearheading the RFC, co-chair Sen. Lindsey Port (DFL – Burnsville) underscored the collective endeavor needed to secure bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom, saying, "The RFC has always understood that we have to stand together in order to fight for our right to exist, love, and parent how we choose." Their focal points for the 2024 agenda are built upon previous legislative victories, such as the Protect Reproductive Options Act, the ban on anti-LGBTQIA+ "conversion therapy," and the passing of the Trans Refuge Act in the year 2023.
