The collision occurred when Ordonez's Lexus SUV came to a stop on the railroad tracks at the intersection of West Atlantic Boulevard and Dixie Highway around 9:35 p.m. it's been reported; despite the activated crossing signals including safety lights, bells, and descending gates, why the vehicle remained stationary as the train neared remains a mystery. The Sun Sentinel adds that the train engineer attempted to halt the train but was unable to prevent the "T-bone" type collision that ultimately killed Ordonez.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel, alongside Broward Sheriff's Office deputies, responded to the scene but Ordonez was pronounced dead at the scene; the catastrophic event is now under the scrutiny of BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit. As the investigation proceeds, authorities have underscored the peril presented by railroad crossings, stressing the importance of heightened vigilance and adherence to safety measures for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
