A North Henderson local, 48-year-old Alan Dean Secrist, has received a 30-month prison sentence after failing to adhere to sex offender registry requirements, officials reported on Thursday. Secrist, from the 500 block of 300th Street, will also undergo five years of supervised release following his incarceration.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois, Secrist, who was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse back in 2011, did not register his residence as mandated by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), which classifies him as a Tier III offender and, warrants lifetime registration as a sex offender. Having been tracked down and arrested in March 2023, Secrist had been under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since.
The judgeship of Chief United States District Judge Sara L. Darrow sentenced Secrist on February 14, underscoring the seriousness of his noncompliance with SORNA regulations. Although the law stipulates that such failure to register could result in up to a decade behind bars, followed by a supervised release period of five years to life, Secrist's plea in October 2023 factored into his 30-month sentence.
Law enforcement cooperation was pivotal in bringing the case to a close, with joint efforts from the Galesburg Police Department, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, and law enforcement in Fountain, Colorado; the United States Marshals Service also played a critical role. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth Lee Aguilar represented the federal government's interests in the prosecution's proceedings.
