In what could have been a nightmare for Palm Beach County residents, the 911 emergency call system suffered a short-lived outage, authorities said earlier today. WPTV reports that the system, which had gone down earlier in the day, was confirmed by the sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera to be fully operational as of 1:51 p.m.
During the downtime, which spanned less than an hour, the sheriff's office was quick to alert the public to alternatives methods of reaching emergency services. In a brief hiccup, the system was knocked offline just after 1 p.m., prompting concerns about public safety, and potential delays in dispatching help to those in dire need. But, swift efforts by officials restored normalcy soon after.
The cause of the outage was pinned to technical issues, as iHeart's WIOD relayed from the Sheriff's Office. Alternative emergency numbers were provided to the public during the temporary collapse of the 911 service, indicating the authority's preparedness for such technical hiccups.
