A tragic accident in Palo Alto on Monday night claimed the life of a young female bicyclist after she was hit by multiple vehicles. The collision happened at approximately 9:06 p.m. at Embarcadero Road and Newell Road. The incident is currently under investigation by local authorities.
According to the City of Palo Alto's official report, the woman was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save her life. Initial findings suggest the victim may have been preparing to turn northbound when she quickly was struck from behind by a vehicle that was following the traffic signal on a green light.
The driver involved in the first collision, a teen driving a blue 2023 Honda Accord, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the police. His vehicle's dash-cam captured the entire event, indicating that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in his case. However, two other vehicles that subsequently hit the cyclist did not stop and fled the scene. The Palo Alto police are actively looking into these vehicles but have yet to release specific details.
Witness accounts and dash-cam footage aid the investigation run by Palo Alto's Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team. Officers are asking anyone with information about the collision to come forward and contact the 24-hour dispatch center or provide anonymous tips via email or text as the police department asked.
The identity of the deceased cyclist has not been publicly released. It will eventually come from the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner. This incident marks a serious reminder of the vulnerability of cyclists on the road, particularly at night and during poor weather conditions.
