Portland General Electric (PGE) is lighting the way for low-income residents with an expansion of its discount power program, potentially cutting the cost of electricity for tens of thousands of households in the area. Announced Monday, PGE's bolstered Income-Qualified Bill Discount (IQBD) program is now offering a significant uplift in savings, doling out discounts of up to 60%, KATU reported.

With energy bills spiking an average of 18% this year, or roughly $24 more a month for residents – the expansion comes as a relief to many who were hit with steeper than expected energy costs. According to OPB, PGE spokesperson Tyler Richardson outlined the discount variance, with savings ranging from 15% to 60% over two years. So far, about 75,000 customers have signed up, a number surpassing the population of nearby Springfield, with an additional 85,000 customers now eyed as eligible participants.

This move seeks to ease the burden faced by many after the reported rate hike caused public consternation. PGE's Senior Director of Customer Service Michaela Lynn emphasized the company's commitment to its patrons, stating, “Energy is essential, and PGE is committed to serving everyone reliable and affordable power,” as obtained by KOIN. “The IQBD has an easy enrollment process and was designed to result in meaningful assistance. We encourage all who qualify to sign up today.”

Eligibility for the program is grounded in household size and gross annual income levels, which can be navigated through PGE's website or by contacting their customer service directly. The application is available in 15 languages, according to Richardson. As an instance, a single-person household earning $33,427 annually qualifies for the discount, while the threshold for a family of four is set at $64,282 – aiming to encompass a swath of Portlanders struggling with energy costs.
