The Portland Police Bureau is bulking up its ranks, Mayor Ted Wheeler and Police Chief Bob Day inducted 19 new officers and 5 professional staff to their team, as reported by the City of Portland's official site. In an effort to fill the thin blue line, the bureau, having plummeted to a record low of 773 sworn members in September 2022, kicked off the addition of these officers who will take part in an extensive 18-month training program before they hit the streets solo.
Presented with their badges, these officers are now set on a rigorous training course designed not only to prepare them for the realities of law enforcement but also to shape them as individuals competent to carry the weight of the badge. The curriculum includes a stint at the Basic Academy and a local PPB Advanced Academy, after which they will be closely shadowing experienced field coaches, ensuring that when the time comes, they will be prepared to serve their community.
The hiring spree continues, with the bureau announcing aims to hire a total of 80 officers this year, as the Portland Police Bureau's personnel division has seen a flurry of interest with over 1,259 applications in 2023, and already 160-plus people throwing their hats in the ring this year. Getting a badge has never been more enticing; the city is even offering a reimbursement of up to $10,000 in moving expenses to woo candidates from beyond the city's bounds.
The lucrative package laid out for officers is likely a draw for many. With a generous salary stretching from $75,000 to $113,000, not to mention the attractive benefits where 95% is footed by the city, and a chance to make an average of $188,000 as a top step officer in 2023 according to the same Portland Police Bureau article, the Portland law enforcement career path is both exciting and rewarding.
This accelerated hiring process, now streamlined to five months or less, shows PPB's determination to rebuild and revitalize a force that promises more than just a paycheck but a chance to make a substantial difference in the lively city of Portland. Despite the still present vacancies, Portlanders can rest assured that safety and justice remain a priority as more boots are primed to hit the ground running.
