The concrete jungle beneath the Hawthorne Bridge just got a major facelift, and it's turning heads in Portland's Central Eastside. Four towering bridge columns, previously plain and ignored, now burst with color and narrative thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Portland Street Art Alliance (PSAA), local muralist Hayden Senter, and Travel Portland. These monumental murals, part of the Viaduct Arts Column Mural Initiative, aim to do more than just break up the urban monotony—they celebrate the city's unique cultural staples and unsung heroes.
According to the Portland Tribune, the first of the quartet pays tribute to the city's history by reviving the spirit of the Lovejoy Columns, originally painted by Tom Stefopoulos in the 1940s. With history on solid footing, the third installment splashes out homage to the high-energy dragon boat races, a hallmark of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation, floating the city’s artistic flair.
Not everyone who made their mark on Portland comes from the past or participates in grand festivals, though. As noted by KOIN, the final mural spotlights the Ground Score Association—a democratic worker association of dumpster divers, canners, and waste pickers. Through these visuals, viewers get a glimpse into the world of individuals who turn one man's trash into their own treasure, crafting a narrative of sustainability and resilience.
Funded by grants from Travel Portland and a donation from NorthRim, the project was brought to life with support from a partnership including the Regional Arts & Culture Council, the Central Eastside Industrial Council, and Multnomah County's Transportation Bridge Division. Additional insights from PSAA reveal the initiative's larger ambition: to use public art as a tool to unify, beautify, and narrate the tales of a city bursting at the seams with undervalued stories and eclectic identities.
With each mural completely wrapped around the bridge columns at Southeast Madison and Water Avenue, Portlanders and visitors alike can now experience a pop of culture in an unexpected urban canvas. The Viaduct Arts Column Mural Initiative not only adds vibrancy to the streets of the Central Eastside but also stamps the community's commitment to recognizing all facets of its cultural tapestry. It's a public display of appreciation that tells a story from the past while echoing the lives and contributions of the people living the city's present.
