Protesters Demand Ceasefire, End to U.S. Arms Supply to Israel During Brief Golden Gate Bridge DemonstrationSource: Michiel1972, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Protesters took their grievances to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge on Wednesday morning, prompting a swift response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). A group of demonstrators briefly blocked traffic, wielding signs, and bringing attention to recent violence in the Middle East.

The disruption began just before 8 a.m., according to KTVU, but the situation was resolved in a mere half-hour. The protesters demanded an end to U.S. weapons being sent to Israel, and called for a ceasefire, following Israel's bombing of Rafah. The CHP, in a display of efficiency, was able to reopen southbound lanes by merely asking protesters to move, which they, did.

The Palestinean Youth Movement claimed responsibility for the demonstration, as they did during a similar event that occurred on the Bay Bridge three months prior. In a news release, the group stated, "dozens of Bay Area residents shut down the Golden Gate Bridge in response to Israel's bombing of Rafah, to demand that President Biden stop supplying Israel with weapons and to call for an immediate ceasefire."

The action on the bridge was peaceful, and no arrests were made, NBC Bay Area reported. Demonstrators displayed their message across northbound lanes with a banner, halting traffic for about 15-20 minutes before yielding to authorities' requests. Despite the potential for heavy disruption, traffic resumed shortly after the protesters dispersed.
