Lunette aims to continue Nyum Bai's legacy by dishing out Cambodian-inspired noodle and vegetable delights along with rice plates that pay homage to Cambodian street food. This new eatery takes over the space previously held by Prather Ranch Meats; it'll offer a Cambodian noodle and vegetable dishes as well as rice plates reminiscent of the vibrant street food scene in Cambodia, while set in an inviting environment reflecting and celebrating Cambodian culture, Chef Yun expressed a desire to "bring Cambodian cuisine to the people of San Francisco in an easy, welcoming and warm environment that reflects and celebrates our culture," according to a statement acquired by SFist.
The story of Nyum Bai's resurrection in the form of Lunette comes after a long hiatus; the anticipation brewed since the business license application was spotted last June, Chef Yun's journey transcends her professional achievements, having been born to Cambodian refugee parents in Thailand before moving to the U.S., and the foods of her childhood starkly contrasted with the typical American diet of her peers, a dynamic that informed her unique culinary perspective, and in a 2018 interview with Bon Appetit, she recounted her childhood experiences, saying "I remember kids looking at my lunch box with a funny look, because it smelled weird and looked weird. I just wanted a sandwich to take to school, to fit it. But I wasn’t totally ashamed; back then, I was going back and forth between two very different upbringings, identifying myself as a Cambodian first and foremost, but also as an American, and that’s how I think of myself now."
