San Francisco's Muni is making a bold comeback, with its ridership jumping a significant 25% in 2023 compared to the previous year, the SFMTA reported recently. Now averaging 433,000 people hitting the buses and trains on weekdays, numbers reveal a climb to 71% of where things stood pre-COVID-19 in 2019—indicating a public transport renaissance in the face of a pandemic that once kept commuters at bay. The weekend warriors are showing an even stronger return, with the weekend ridership rates soaring to a stellar 86% of 2019's peak.
Despite the ongoing saga of remote work truncating the flow of downtown traffic, SFMTA has pivoted with agility, reshaping its services toward stitching the city's vibrant neighborhoods together, and according to their press release, several lines like the 22-Fillmore have even surpassed their pre-pandemic figures, the weekend rates hitting a windfall of 138%. However, beyond the impressive statistics, operational enhancements have cut down delays, amped up maintenance, and staggered schedules to provide what is now perceived as a more seamless and palatable travel experience for Bay Area commuters.
The improvements extend beneath the city as well, with the subway system experiencing a dramatic drop in major delays by 76% since 2019, as stated by SFMTA's blog, "Last Year Made it Clear: Muni is Back, and Better". Combining this with enhanced training for transit operators and customer service reps, and a 50% increase in shelter cleanings, it's no small wonder that the latest rider surveys reflect a 9-point incline in customer satisfaction. This exciting upward trend hasn't gone unnoticed by the regular Joe looking for reliable transportation around the city.
With almost half of the entire Bay Area's transit trips currently on Muni, this transit giant is heading full steam into a future where reliability, efficiency, and rider satisfaction seem to be the golden tickets, yet. The SFMTA has remained proactive in adjusting to this new normal, there's the recognition that there's still a road to continual improvement. The transit authority reports nearly two-thirds of respondents giving a thumbs up to Muni services, solidifying its commitment to keep pushing the envelope further, with transparent aims to elevate their offerings even higher if they can wheel in more resources.
