In a sharp response to a blunder at the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility, deputies corrected an erroneous release of an incarcerated person, officials said. Heriberto Avila, 43, of Menlo Park, was unintentionally set free Wednesday morning but was apprehended before the day's end. According to a statement from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, the mistake was identified immediately and swift action was taken to safely locate the individual.
Avila, with a history of arrests for various bench warrants dating back to October 2023, was nabbed in Mountain View later that morning. The turnabout operation roped in the collaborative efforts of numerous law enforcement bodies—among them the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force, the hasty coordination not going unnoticed.
Once back in custody, Avila was booked into the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Main Jail, where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon. The sudden lapse in facility protocol raised questions, prompting an internal call for a comprehensive review to suss out the contributing factors to the release error.
Expressing gratitude for the multi-agency hustle, the Sheriff's Office tipped their hats to the Menlo Park Police Department and everyone involved for their assistance in Avila's recapture. The particulars of the review and potential measures for preventing future slip-ups are yet to unfold, but the Sheriff's Office has signified their commitment to ensuring such an oversight does not recur.
